Streetlight Theatre (Community Sign Up!)

From 10:00AM to 12:00PM

Sign-up Day Scheduled For New “Theater Community” Group Streetlight Theatre, a new theater community, will be holding a sign-up day for its inaugural summer season at the Herkimer Reformed Church, on the corner of Main and Church Streets in Herkimer. Any interested person who lives, works, goes to school or college, or plays in the Mohawk Valley, including children and adults of all ages, is welcome to join this new theater community. Streetlight Theatre, organized by members of the community, will be striving to introduce a fresh approach to the theater arts in the Mohawk Valley, which is to create an intentional sense of community within the group. Each person involved will work to support and encourage each other inside and outside of the group. Our desire is to live according to the values of the Kingdom of God by teaching that the values of other people, their interests and the interests of the community, is above any one individual’s pursuits. We stress that you do not need to be a Christian to participate in Streetlight Theatre, but ask that each member accept that a core value of Streetlight Theatre will be to live according to Jesus’ “Golden Rule” which is to “Treat others as you would want them to treat you.” By instilling and practicing these values that foster respect for one another and for our community, Streetlight Theatre is not Community Theater, but rather a “Theater Community.” Mark Andersen, pastor of the Herkimer Reformed Church who also has an educational background in theater, and who will serve as Streetlight Theatre’s director says “we want to help teach and develop the theatrical arts in the Mohawk Valley, giving people in our community an outlet for creative expression and teaching us all to value art and artistry. . . Theater has a way of impacting people. We want to impact the Mohawk Valley in helpful and hopeful ways through our work and play.” It is not the goal to replace other local theater groups, but to offer an outlet for the people of the Mohawk Valley to work and play together while forming lasting, meaningful relationships for the betterment of the community as a whole. Streetlight Theatre will be presenting two one-act plays in a dessert theater setting for the community this summer. The first play is a “wild, fast-paced extravaganza (playscripts.com)” of Grimm’s fairy tales presented in comedic form called The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon. Written by Don Zolidis, this play was the recipient of the Missouri State Readers Theater Championship (2008) and the Virginia State One-Act Competition (2008). The second one-act play is Crossin’ the Line, written by Phil Bosakowski, and is set in a rural upstate New York town which follows a “series of tragic events (dramatists.com)” in the life of Kara, the main character. Crossin’ the Line was “first producted by the Delaware Theatre Company” and was performed off-Broadway in NYC in 1989. Another value of Streetlight Theatre will be to produce quality material for our audiences, and a great deal of time was spent selecting two plays for the inaugural season. Crossin’ the Line and Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon were selected for their ability to speak to our culture and community, each in a unique way. We are seeking individuals to fill the roles of actors/actresses, behind the scenes, administrative help and dessert chefs. Each member of Streetlight Theatre will be given the opportunity to find a place within the group, regardless of level of experience, each according to their talents and gifts, and will be encouraged and taught to develop new skills. We also invite leaders in the arts, business and technical fields to join Streetlight Theatre in presenting a positive, respectful learning environment to the community. We need people who have skills in sewing, lighting/sound, marketing, baking, art design and the theater to help teach all aspects of production. Rehearsals will be held throughout June and July, but not every day of the week and will be designed to suit summer schedules. Production will take place in late July or early August, to be announced soon. If you desire to be part of this new theatre community, or would like to learn more about the core values, goals and general information of Streetlight Theatre, please join us on Saturday, April 21 for the sign-up day. If you cannot make it to this event, but would still like to be involved, please “like” Streetlight Theatre on Facebook and leave a message on our page so that we can inform you of schedules for upcoming try-outs and meetings. We also encourage you to recommend Streetlight Theatre to all of your friends!
