Blacksmithing Workshop

From 9:00AM to 4:00PM

You can step back into a time when the blacksmith was one of the most important craftsmen in the community. On Saturday, instructor, Tom Metouten, will create an 18th century experience as he reproduces authentic examples of early iron work using traditional methods and technologies from hand blown charcoal fires.

This one-day hands-on workshop at Herkimer Home State Historic Site is for beginners and those who have a minimal amount of experience. The workshop will include an overview of blacksmithing history, tools, technique, and core skills of blacksmithing. Each participant will forge practical and decorative items from hot steel to take home and amaze their family and friends. We provide both tools and safety equipment. Students may bring their own safety glasses and/or apron. Appropriate work wear is required (long sleeves, long pants and hard shoes or boots.) Participants should bring a sack lunch. Water and a snack will be provided.

The fee for this workshop is $ 75.00, and registration and prepayment are required. Space is limited to 10 students. Registrants who cancel less than 7 days prior to the workshop will not receive a refund unless the participant's spot can be filled.

*To register, call Herkimer Home at (315) 823-0398*

Old Fort Johnson is the 1749 home of Sir William Johnson, a prominent New York citizen of the colonial period. The limestone home, fortified during the French and Indian War, reflects Johnson’s early beginnings in the Mohawk Valley.

Owned and operated by the Montgomery County Historical Society, a private, non-profit organization, the Old Fort houses period rooms with a number of furnishings from the Johnson family, special long and short term exhibits showcasing Montgomery County artifacts, and a rare 18th century privy.

Old Fort Johnson is located on Route 5 at the intersection of Route 67 in the village of Fort Johnson, one mile west of Amsterdam, and just a short distance from Thruway Exit 27. For additional information, call 843-0300 or visit our website at www.oldfortjohnson.org
