There will be an unveiling of a historical marker to Cato Freedom, a slave who gained his freedom during the Revolutionary War. Following his service, Cato purchased a farm in Burlington, NY, with his pension. The marker will stand inside the Butternut Valley Cemetery where Cato, his wife and one of two daughters is buried on County Route 16, Burlington (just outside Garrattsville). The ceremony will be held in the Butternut Valley Cemetery. It will include the Edmeston American Legion, Timothy Simmons (an Edmeston Central School trumpeter) and local dignitaries. The marker is sponsored by the Otsego County Historical Association, the Butternut Valley Cemetery, the US Colored Troops Institute and the local NAACP. The event is free and all are welcome. Light refreshments will be served.
Mountain Man Hunting Club will be hosting a Steak Bake. $20 a ticket includes meal and 1 beverage. Advance tickets available until May 13. A family size dish to pass is greatly appreciated!
